Abstract
Traditional automotive supply chains are contrasted to the way automotive supplychains may be organised in the future in order to discuss the changing role ofshipping companies. A shipping company's core capabilities, business relations andservice portfolio define its role.In the next few years, the traditional shipping companies may have to evolve fromhighly specialized, asset-based operators into operators with significant systemscapability and possibly logistics management and alliance capability as well. Nowseems to be the right time to start preparing for a future radically different from thesituation today. The paper draws upon an extensive research project carried out by WalleniusWilhelmsen Lines (WWL). WWL is one of the world's largest vehicle and ro/rotransportation and logistics companies with an annual turnover reaching 1.5 billionUSD. The WWL fleet consists of more than 60 large vessels.
