    Obituary: Ivan Snehota 1946-2022

    Ivan Snehota 1946-2022
No researcher is an island. But occasionally one can meet an unusually gifted researcher, whose work becomes a beacon in an archipelago difficult to navigate. Ivan Snehota was one of those, whose contributions became shoulders for others to stand on. For colleagues in market studies; especially for us in the IMP research community, and also for fellows engaged in other disciplines, among others history, sociology, economic geography, and Science & Technology Studies.

    Obituary: Björn Axelsson 1948-2021

    Björn Axelsson 1948-2021
On April 19, IMP lost one of its most experienced and competent B2B researchers.
Björn presented his PhD thesis The rise and fall of the Wikmanshyttan steel works: A commentary on the approach in a company history study at Uppsala University in 1981. The thesis was a thorough examination of the fundamentals of Interaction Approach that was used to trace the interaction processes that impacted the evolution of a steel company for over a century. Already at that time Björn was an engaged member of the IMP Group, committed to developing the conceptual frameworks that marked the IMP research tradition and resulted in in the book Industrial Networks – A New View of Reality (1992), edited together with Geoff Easton and recently republished as one of ‘Routledge Revivals’.

JOIN THE IMP FORUM SEMINAR, Universita’ Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM), Ancona, Italy, 3-4 October 2019

The aim of the IMP FORUM SEMINAR in Ancona is to discuss research on the empirical phenomenon of ‘Business and sustainable development’
as well as related conceptual and methodological issues. Research on the general phenomenon of business interaction is also discussed.

    ‘Business and sustainable development’

Nowadays ‘sustainable development’ is gaining increasingly importance. New approaches and technologies such as circular economy and the rise of the Industry 4.0 have been increasingly highlighted as means that help business and society to move towards sustainable development (McDowall et al., 2017). It is evident that technological development and innovation are not enough to meeting future resource needs in a sustainable manner. New ways of organizing (at single company level, at inter-organizational level and at network level), sensible public policies and public-private partnerships are needed to face such a great challenge. Indeed, production and distribution processes emerge as combinations of different technologies, often dispersed in the business network. Development towards sustainability is likely to affect businesses and their way to operate, the way they relate to other businesses and the dynamics of business networks. We are convinced (as the IMP colleagues who have already addressed these issues) that the IMP perspective (e.g. Håkansson and Snehota, 2017), with its focus on interactions, relationships and networks, can generate new and valuable insights on sustainable development by tackling the problem from a theoretical, methodological, managerial and policy making perspective.

7th biennial International Symposium on Cross-Sector Social Interactions, June 24-26th 2020

You are warmly invited to come to the University of Limerick for the 7th biennial International Symposium on Cross-Sector Social Interactions (CSSI 2020) June 24-26th 2020. The study of interaction, relationships and networks composed of actors from multiple sectors have been of great interest to IMP researchers. These forms of collaboration are on the rise, in particular in attempts to address issues of sustainability (see Ritual and Salmi 2011 work on issue networks) or in response to emerging social procurement imperatives, which are driving new forms of cross-sector collaboration between private, public and social enterprise sectors (Barraket and Loosemore (2017). The specific theme of the 2020 symposium is Partnerships and Place, and there is a accompanying special issue with the Journal of Business Ethics (see CEP). Beyond the special issue and specific conference theme, we welcome abstracts on any relevant and timely topic related to cross sector partnering in contemporary business market settings.

New book: The Internationalisation Maturity of the Firm. A Business Relationships Perspective

In the 21st century, even small firms can reach customers located in different, often remote, parts of the world. In fact, internationalisation has become a common phenomenon that affects the majority of companies worldwide. Recent research emphasises that there are numerous determinants of a company’s competitive advantage in the international business environment, including product quality, price, and market knowledge. Much less attention, however, has been paid to the role of business relationships.

    Passing of David T. Wilson

Dave Wilson passed away on February 1, 2015. Dave was a faculty member in the Penn State Marketing Department for over 30 years and held the Alvin J. Clemens Professorship in Entrepreneurial Studies when he retired in 2001. Dave was an active IMP member for more than 20 years. During his long career, he served as the Chair of the Marketing Department and as the academic director of the MBA program, he was the co-founder of the Institute for the Study of Business Markets (ISBM), and he was the founding Editor of the Journal of Business to Business Marketing. Books in revival

Two IMP-books published as “Routledge Revivals”!
“A fantastic opportunity for you to discover past brilliance and purchase previously out of print and unavailable titles by some of the world’s most eminent academic scholars.” This is how Routledge’s present the “Routledge Revivals” series, in which two IMP books are published:
Industrial Technological Development: A Network Approach, edited by Håkan Håkansson, was first published in 1987, and Håkan Håkansson’s Corporate Technological Behaviour: Co-operation and Networks, was first published in 1989.
In Industrial Technological Development the basic principles of innovation and the role of supplier and customer relationships are discussed, and several case studies on this theme is presented. In Corporate Technological Behaviour: Co-operation and Networks, the theoretical discussion on innovation is illustrated with a detailed study of technological development in interaction among companies and organizations.

    IMP Asia 2014

    IMP Asia

In between two ordinary IMP conferences; the 30th (!) nicely organized in Bordeaux 2014 and the 31st upcoming conference in Kolding, Denmark, the sixth IMP Asia meeting was held at Sanur, Bali, Indonesia December 7-10 2014.

Just a short look at the list of participants of the latter indicates that the interest in the interactive features of the business landscape is widespread: The about 55 participating researchers represented 35 universities and business schools from 15 countries; from New Zeeland, Australia, Japan and Thailand in east over to the US and Canada in west. The geographical spread was also reflected in the variety of presented empirical issues. And the conference location and facilities was just great. Thanks to the work put in by the organizers Fawaz Baddar Althusan and Chavi Fletcher-Chen. And in the background everything was carefully followed up by all ours Peter Batt. In two years time IMP Asia will probably become IMP Africa! When planning your agenda for 2016, remember Capetown in December!

    Malcolm Cunningham

    PROFESSOR MALCOLM CUNNINGHAM
    1927-2014

Malcolm Cunningham died peacefully on October 22nd in a hospice near his home in Manchester. He had just achieved his 87th birthday.

Malcolm joined the University of Manchester, Institute of Science and Technology as a Lecturer after a distinguished career in business. He rose to become Professor of Marketing and Head of Department.

Malcolm led the field with his earliest research into the determinants of choice of supplier for industrial goods, with John White, published in 1973 and on source loyalty in the purchase of transport services, with Keith Kettlewood in 1976. His insights into the nature of the business landscape provided inspiration for the later work of the IMP Group of which he was a Founder Member.
But the contributions of Malcolm cannot be adequately described in a list of appointments held or papers published, although his achievements were great and his publications were many. Malcolm was a friend to an untold number of colleagues and students. Many of those who gather at IMP conferences have stories of the careful advice they have received from him and the journeys he has made to help them. Many of us have benefitted from his wisdom even when he said things that we would have preferred not to hear. But always we have gained from his honesty and been able to smile at his self-deprecating sense of humour.
Malcolm retired from active research many years ago and devoted himself to a wide range of charitable works. But until he was no-longer able to travel, he was to be found at IMP Conferences, still contributing to discussion, still challenging and still bringing his enormous sense of fun.

Malcolm’s final publication appeared in the IMP journal in 2008, based on his own empirical research, entitled:

“Pictures at an Exhibition of Business Markets: Is There A Case For Competition?”

It was a broad and challenging work, based in part on his empirical research in the packaging industry. In the paper Malcolm pointed to the danger of IMP researchers becoming inward-looking. But Malcolm was never negative. In the paper he also encourages us go on to great things by quoting the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak:

    "To have a good idea is nothing remarkable;
but to carry out an idea and make
something great of it, that is the most
difficult thing. That is, in fact, Art"

Perhaps thinking about this quotation provides a good way for us to remember a great man.

Malcolm’s funeral will take place at Bramhall Baptist Church in Manchester on Monday 3rd November at 14.00. It is open to all. Please email David.Ford@euromed-management.com if you are planning to attend.

    Innovation in Business-to-Business Networks
Special issue Call for Papers for the
Journal of Business & Industrial Marketing
Our Call for Papers is aimed at exploring how the features of business actors impact
the innovations generated in interactions in networks. The topic of how such different
actors confront their goals and how this impacts on the process of generation,
adoption, and diffusion of an innovation is of particular interest.
Some specific, but not exclusive, research questions are the following:
    • How do different business actors’ goals impact innovations generated in
    networks?
    • How do these goals combine and co-exist in the development, adoption and
diffusion of innovation? How do they address innovation-related processes?
    • Does the interaction among actors with heterogeneous goals lead to certain
resource interfaces to develop more than others?
    • How do different goals co-exist in a business actor and how do they affect the
different innovation processes it is involved into?
    • Are there any patterns in how actors’ goals and the innovation networks
    change over time?

    SOPHIE CANTILLON

    1966 - 2010

Sophie Cantillon first became involved in the IMP Group as an MBA student at the University of Bath. She became fascinated by the research and excited because it seemed to relate well to her experience of business. While at Bath, Sophie was involved in developing the ideas on Networking that appeared in the second edition of Managing Business Relationships. She determined to change her career direction after her MBA and to become a researcher and demonstrated her commitment and ability by being the top student for her year.

Sophie moved to Oslo to take a Phd at BI with Hakan Hakansson. There she was closely involved in the Newmark Project and carried out extensive research into the Fish Network in the UK, Chile and Portugal. Some of this work has been published in the IMP Journal and formed the basis for her Phd Thesis.

In 2008 she moved to Chalmers and continued her research into business interaction. But tragically, she became ill in early 2010 and died on December 5th.

Sophie was a dedicated scholar of great potential. She also had a huge appetite for life and a wonderful approach to it. She brought joy to all of us who knew her.

The third issue of the current volume of the Journal is now on the site. This issue develops a number of important themes that have been prominent in IMP Research. The first two articles are extended case studies in the IMP Tradition and both explore the concept of "Embeddedness". The first article by Frida Lind and Anna Dubois examine a number of aspects of embeddedness using the case of a research innnovation. The second paper by Anna Bengtson and Hakan Hakansson looks at resource embeddedness in the context of a major technological change.

The third article by Lars Erik Gadde and David Ford examines the links between network thinking and the early works by distribution and marketing scholars. The article relates the two different approaches to empirical trends in distribution and suggests how a network approach could contribute to a greater understanding of distribution.

    DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM 2008

What’s going on at the IMP Doctoral Consortium?

When the first IMP Doctoral Consortium was arranged five years ago no one knew if the interest for such a forum for deep, informal discussions between PhD students and more experienced IMP researchers would last. The 5th IMP Doctoral Consortium, which will take place immediately prior to the main conference in Uppsala, Sweden, has nonetheless attracted yet another group of PhD students with a wide and interesting variety of research projects.

This years’ consortium, which is co-ordinated by Debbie Harrison, BI, Oslo, involves twelve PhD students and six members of faculty, as well as a number of eminent guest speakers. The 12 PhD students are: Ricardo Correia and Francisco Lemos, both based in Portugal and working with such varied research projects as the co-operation effect in the internationalisation of the firm (Francisco) and ‘Industrial Networks and Territorial Dynamics’ (Ricardo). From the host country Sweden, Stefan Karlsson and Mikael Lovblad are researching interactive product development and the impact of psychological contracts upon relationship commitment respectively. Helen Li, Isaac Ngugi and Daisy Tan from the UK are studying topics as varied as managing relationships in HE marketing, capabilities building and B2B e-commerce adoption. Aniko Schubert (Hungary) is investigating buyer-supplier relationships in the Hungarian FMCG sector, while Gwenaelle Oruezabala (France) is working with the role of boundary spanners in international B2B relationships. Olli Pekkarinen (Finland) is researching ‘Services in the Marketing of Customer Solutions’ while Mads Mortensen (Denmark) is working with the ‘Development of Attractiveness towards strategically important partners’. Mirjam Kibbeling from the Netherlands is studying value from supply management.

The members of the faculty this year includes professors Anna Dubois (Chalmers, Sweden), Geoff Easton (Lancaster University, UK), Håkan Håkansson (BI, Norway), Peter Naude (University of Manchester, UK) and Alexandra Waluszewski (Uppsala University, Sweden); along with Dr Debbie Harrison (BI, Norway). With this group of faculty, are mixture of research interests and countries are represented. In keeping with previous events, we will also have a number of plenary sessions taking place, with renowned researchers as guest speakers: Prof. M. Cunningham (Founding member of IMP), Prof. J. Johanson (Uppsala University, Sweden) and Prof. Peter LaPlaca, Editor-in-chief of Industrial Marketing Management (University of Hartford, USA).

Call for papers: Organizing and Integrating Marketing and Purchasing in Business Markets

Call for papers: Organizing and Integrating Marketing and Purchasing in Business Markets

Despite the increasing attention international marketing and management scholars pay to the nature and dynamics of business markets and on management strategies within these contexts, research and debate on organizing marketing and purchasing in companies operating in business markets is still limited. Although, during the past decade, a broad stream of research on “supply chain management” and “business relationships and networks” has emerged, only few authors have discussed the implications of these perspectives on business markets
    - for companies’ marketing and purchasing strategies and
    - for the role of as well as the capabilities needed in companies’ marketing and purchasing organizations.
The aim of the special issue is to address research issues dealing with the impact that a relational context - and in particular a variety of interactions and interdependencies with customers and suppliers - may have on the strategic role, organization, capabilities and performance of the marketing and purchasing functions within firms acting in business markets.

    IMP Journal

    Dear Friends

We plan to have the first issue of the new IMP JOURNAL published on the IMP WEBSITE (impgroup.org) by January 1st 2006. The on-line, fully refereed journal will be available to all without subscription. Our aim is to publish the very highest quality work within the IMP Group's areas of interest. We are concerned with all aspects of the interaction between companies in business networks.

In May 2005 we held the first IMP JOURNAL SEMINAR in Oslo. Attendence was by invitation to approximately thirty potential authors. These authors submitted papers which were read by two members of the Editorial Review Board. Authors presented their papers at the seminar, after which they were commented on by the Reviewers and discussed by the group. This format provided a good opportunity for authors to develop their work for further review. A number of papers developed from the seminar will be published in future issues of the journal.

Following the success of the seminar, we plan to hold a second seminar in May 2006. This year we would like to make the seminar open to a wider group and I have enclosed an invitation to submit papers for the seminar.

PLACES ARE COMPETITIVE AND STRICTLY LIMITED.

I hope that you will be able to respond to this invitation.

    Best wishes

    David Ford

    Seminar on Using Technology

    FALL SEMINAR ON USING TECHNOLOGY
October 28-30, 2005 in Oslo, Norway
A co-arrangement by the Newmark Project, BI, Norwegian School of Management, Oslo and Uppsala STS, Centre for Science and Technology Studies, Uppsala University

A seminar on technological development and interaction in business networks devoted to the particular theme “using technology”.

Technology and technological development has often been defined and labeled from a production perspective emphasizing the technology from the producer’s point of view. However, technological development can in the same way be studied from the users point of view. The using activity is an integrated aspect of the “using technologies”. The consumers are applying certain using technologies, retailers and distributors some others, and producers, finally, are certainly also using a set of technologies in order to produce. It is our contention that we need a more thorough understanding of the using technology to obtain a richer understanding of the total economic system as a whole. In this seminar we want to discuss this theme more extensively by combining scientific studies from different fields. We welcome proposals under this theme. See full invitation for further details concerning proposals, important dates and other practical issues. Questions can be addressed to Frans Prenkert, frans.prenkert@bi.no.
    Welcome to Oslo this fall!

New dissertation: Variety in Distribution Networks: A Transvection Analysis by Kajsa Hulthen

Kajsa will defend her dissertaion the 18th of October at Chalmers in Gothenburg. The opponent is Per Andersson from Stockholm School of Economics. The aim of the dissertaion is to explore variety in distribution networks, the framework built on the industrial network approach in combination with Alderson´s tranvection approach is applied on distribution of PCs. Variety is analysed by identifying and analysing a number of transvections, and how they are interconnected. The analysis focuses on how objects, starting as raw material and ending up as an end-product, are changing in different dimensions as they are sorted and transformed.

    "IMP 3" project

Hi, during my recent speech at the IMP conference in Copenhagen, I talked about whether or not there is a need for an "IMP 3" project. What I was referring to was a multi-country empirical project to develop new ideas and theory, it wouldn't need to be called "IMP 3" at all. Is there any interest in this? I wanted to post this message as a completely open and transparent invitation. If anyone is interested, could you please email me at Debbie.Harrison@bi.no to start some discussions over mail first, with a possibility for a meeting at BI later on. Of course the themes and ideas for the project would need to be discussed and worked through as a group.

I look forward to hearing from you!

    Introducing the IMP-Journal

    From the editors:

Hakan Hakansson, David Ford and Ivan Snehota

The reserach of the IMP Group is based on the idea that business is not an isolated activity that occurs within independent organisations, but that it consists of interaction between interdependent companies, whether as customers, suppliers, development partners, facilitators or competitors.

This research has led to the development of ideas on the characteristics of business relationships and networks, on the processes within them and on how individual companies can operate in these arenas.

It is now time to create a new forum for high quality of research into business interaction; The IMP Journal. We hope that the journal will ........................

    Welcome to visit Uppsala STS

Welcome to visit Uppsala STS, or Uppsala University, Centre for Science and Technology Studies (www.sts.uu.se). The aim of Uppsala STS is to investigate the relation between science, technology and society – business included. A special interest is devoted to the role of science and business development – and to develop an alternative perspective on the fad of today; to consider science and innovations as resources more or less ready to be tapped for economic values by businesses.
